STAR WATCH / ASTRONOMY NIGHT AT RANCOCAS Thursday, October 38 to 11 PM The Rancocas Nature Center hosts the West Jersey Astronomical Society for an evening under the stars. Knowledgeable society members will assemble an array of telescopes and other optics and guide the novice and more experienced observers through the spring night sky. TEEN AND SCOUT CONSERVATION VOLUNTEER DAYS (ages 13-17) Sunday, September 15 12:30 to 3:30 PM Saturday, October 5 8:30 AM to 11:30 AM Sunday, November 3 12:30 to 3:30 PM (part of our Tree Planting Volunteer Day) The Rancocas Nature Center has organized three supervised stewardship conservation project days for fall 2024. It’s a great way for scouts and other youth ages 13 to 17 to get out into nature and accumulate service hours. Parental consent is required, and parents are welcome to volunteer, too. Activities vary depending on the season, but often include removal of invasive species and mulching native plant enclosures and gardens. Volunteers should bring water, work gloves, and dress in work clothes, including appropriate footwear. SCOUTING AMERICA MERIT BADGE: SOIL AND WATER CONSERVATION Saturday, October 19 (Outdoor workshop) 9:30 AM to 3 PM Sunday, November 17 (Field trip) 9:30 AM to 12:30PM Earn your Soil and Water Conservation Badge at the Rancocas Nature Center. Certified Merit Badge counselors will lead you through most requirements for this badge during a Day 1 outdoor workshop utilizing the Rancocas preserve and trails. Day 2 features a morning field trip to participate in an international citizen science project, a beach clean-up, and water testing along the Delaware River. Scouts will be responsible for doing requirements 3A and B, 6C, and D independently. All scouts are required to attend both dates to complete this badge. Cost: $45/per scout. GIRL SCOUT CADETTES: NIGHT OWL BADGE Saturday, November 2 6:30 to 9 PM Join Rancocas naturalists for an evening of fun while earning your Night Owl Badge. Learn about nocturnal animals, practice using your senses in the dark, and take a guided night hike on our trails. Hear stories about the constellations as we gather around a campfire and enjoy s’mores. In addition, an astronomer will be on hand to answer questions about the stars and to assist with observations of the night sky. Each scout should bring a camp chair. ESCAPE ART SERIES: PEBBLE MOSAIC STEPPINGSTONE (ages 16+) Sunday, September 29 1:30 to 3 PM Join us for a relaxing afternoon of art & crafting! This month we will be creating a mosaic on a steppingstone--which would look great in a garden. We will use various colored and shaped pebbles to create our mosaics. Supplies will be provided, but feel free to bring any additional weatherproof item to add to your piece. This outdoor session will move indoors if necessary. Note that the steppingstones will be completed the day of the workshop, but will need a week to cure, so you may pick up your project the following week. Cost: $30 (all supplies included). TREE PLANTING VOLUNTEER DAY (ages 13+) Sunday, November 3 12:30 to 3:30 PM A generous donation of native trees and shrubs has been made to the Rancocas Nature Center and we need volunteers, both teens (with parental permission) as well as adults, to assist in getting them in the ground. CONNECT WITH NATURE SERIES: APPRECIATING POLLINATORS WORKSHOP Sunday, September 22 11:30 AM to 3:30 PM Let’s better understand and appreciate, and begin identifying our local pollinators, including native bees, butterflies, and other insects in this collaboration between Rancocas Nature Center staff and Burlington County Parks naturalist, Jen Bulava. We’ll begin late morning with Robin Sperry’s talk, “Getting to know our Native Bees and Pollinators.” Then Don Feeley, environmental educator and local beekeeper will lead a short, interactive discussion about honey bees followed by an iNaturalist tutorial. The afternoon will continue with Jen Bulava’s presentation of “The Secret World of Plants & Pollinators.” Then we’ll head out to the gardens and grounds to teach you how to observe and document pollinators using the iNaturalist app on our cell phones (download ahead of time) as part of a citizen science project. Bring a digital camera, if you have one and a snack/lunch, if you choose. This event is rain or shine—the outdoor portion may be rescheduled for a later date if necessary. ESCAPE ART SERIES: NATURE JOURNALING FOR BEGINNERS (ages 16+) Sunday, October 27 1:30 to 3:30 PM It’s not necessary to have good artistic ability for a successful nature journal—it’s about observing nature and creating a meaningful record for yourself. This session will instruct beginners in which supplies/tools you can use and how easy it is to start keeping a record of your nature experiences. The workshop with teacher naturalist Robin Sperry, will include at least one hour on the grounds journaling in several different areas of the preserve or practicing inside if the weather is inclement. BOMBAY HOOK FIELD TRIP Saturday, October 26 10 AM TO 3 PM Meet Mary Belko and Michelle Horowitz at this incredible wildlife refuge, stretching eight miles along the Delaware Bay and covering 16,251 acres of salt marsh, tide pools, forest and freshwater impoundments. This designated, Globally Important Bird Area, is well worth the trip any time of year, but especially in October when shorebirds are on the move, and winter waterfowl is arriving as autumn sets in. We will be driving the 12-mile loop, walking some short trails, and climbing a few observation towers. Bring water, lunch and snacks, a windbreaker, hat, and binoculars, if you have them. We will meet at the Visitor Center where restrooms are available. More information will be sent the week of the trip. All skill levels are welcome. MANASQUAN INLET--MONMOUTH COUNTY AND VICINITY FIELD TRIP S Saturday, November 23 10 AM to 1 PM Birder Bob Leifeste and teacher naturalist Mary Belko will be meeting participants on the Monmouth County side of the Inlet in search of sea ducks, loons, and winter shorebirds.
