Our annual family scarecrow building event and self-guided mystery pumpkin hunt trail is fun for all ages! Build your own scarecrow to take home for your yard or front porch--frame, straw, and clothes provided or bring your own. Clothing (long-sleeved shirts and long pants) also accepted for donation. Inclement weather cancels this program. Cost: per scarecrow-- $30/Rancocas Nature Center members; $40/non-members (pay at center upon arrival). Pumpkin hunt trail is free. The Rancocas Nature Center hosts the West Jersey Astronomical Society for an evening under the stars. Knowledgeable society members will assemble an array of telescopes and other optics and guide the novice and more experienced observers through the fall night sky. Please bring a flashlight and chair (optional). Inclement weather cancels this event Cost: FRNC members, $10/person, $35/family (limit 5); nonmembers, $15/person, $45/family (limit 5). This program is for children ages 2 to 6 years old accompanied by an adult and introduces them to the joys and wonders of gardening, from observing seedlings grow to finding wiggly worms. Each session will focus on a different aspect of gardening and include work time in the garden, a story, composting and a craft/activity. Please dress accordingly. Each class will include a story, a natural-area exploration, student-led inquiry, and free play. The Rancocas Nature Center has organized three supervised stewardship conservation project days for fall 2024. It’s a great way for scouts and other youth ages 13 to 17 to get out into nature and accumulate service hours. Parental consent is required, and parents are welcome to volunteer, too. Activities vary depending on the season, but often include removal of invasive species and mulching native plant enclosures and gardens. Volunteers should bring water, work gloves, and dress in work clothes, including appropriate footwear. Upon request, letters can be provided for youth needing proof of service for Scouts, 4-H, Honors Society, etc. Details and sign-up links can be found on the Rancocas Nature Center website at Scout Conservation Volunteer

Certified Merit Badge counselors will lead you through most requirements for this badge during a Day 1 outdoor workshop utilizing the Rancocas preserve and trails. Day 2 features a morning field trip to participate in an international citizen science project, a beach clean-up, and water testing along the Delaware River. Scouts will be responsible for doing requirements 3A and B, 6C, and D independently. All scouts are required to attend both dates to complete this badge. Cost: $45/per scout. Join us for a relaxing afternoon of art & crafting! This month we will be creating a mosaic on a steppingstone--which would look great in a garden. We will use various colored and shaped pebbles to create our mosaics. Supplies will be provided, but feel free to bring any additional weatherproof item to add to your piece. This outdoor session will move indoors if necessary. Note that the steppingstones will be completed the day of the workshop, but will need a week to cure, so you may pick up your project the following week. Cost: $30 (all supplies included). CONNECT WITH NATURE SERIES: APPRECIATING POLLINATORS WORKSHOP

Let’s better understand and appreciate, and begin identifying our local pollinators, including native bees, butterflies, and other insects in this collaboration between Rancocas Nature Center staff and Burlington County Parks naturalist, Jen Bulava. We’ll begin late morning with Robin Sperry’s talk, “Getting to know our Native Bees and Pollinators.” Then Don Feeley, environmental educator and local beekeeper will lead a short, interactive discussion about honey bees followed by an iNaturalist tutorial. The afternoon will continue with Jen Bulava’s presentation of “The Secret World of Plants & Pollinators.” Then we’ll head out to the gardens and grounds to teach you how to observe and document pollinators using the iNaturalist app on our cell phones (download ahead of time) as part of a citizen science project. Bring a digital camera, if you have one and a snack/lunch, if you choose. This event is rain or shine—the outdoor portion may be rescheduled for a later date if necessary. Let’s better understand and appreciate, and begin identifying our local pollinators, including native bees, butterflies, and other insects in this collaboration between Rancocas Nature Center staff and Burlington County Parks naturalist, Jen Bulava. We’ll begin late morning with Robin Sperry’s talk, “Getting to know our Native Bees and Pollinators.” Then Don Feeley, environmental educator and local beekeeper will lead a short, interactive discussion about honey bees followed by an iNaturalist tutorial. The afternoon will continue with Jen Bulava’s presentation of “The Secret World of Plants & Pollinators.” Then we’ll head out to the gardens and grounds to teach you how to observe and document pollinators using the iNaturalist app on our cell phones (download ahead of time) as part of a citizen science project. Bring a digital camera, if you have one and a snack/lunch, if you choose. This event is rain or shine—the outdoor portion may be rescheduled for a later date if necessary. This session will instruct beginners in which supplies/tools you can use and how easy it is to start keeping a record of your nature experiences. The workshop with teacher naturalist Robin Sperry, will include at least one hour on the grounds journaling in several different areas of the preserve or practicing inside if the weather is inclement. Meet Mary Belko and Michelle Horowitz at this incredible wildlife refuge, stretching eight miles along the Delaware Bay and covering 16,251 acres of salt marsh, tide pools, forest and freshwater impoundments. This designated, Globally Important Bird Area, is well worth the trip any time of year, but especially in October when shorebirds are on the move, and winter waterfowl is arriving as autumn sets in. We will be driving the 12-mile loop, walking some short trails, and climbing a few observation towers. Bring water, lunch and snacks, a windbreaker, hat, and binoculars, if you have them. We will meet at the Visitor Center where restrooms are available. More information will be sent the week of the trip. All skill levels are welcome.
