Native Plant Society of NJ

Rancocas Nature Center Chapter

The Rancocas Nature Center Chapter of the Native Plant Society of New Jersey is an activity-focused group that tends native plant gardens at the Nature Center and other locations in the area. We also meet for naturalist-lead walks and other adventures about once a month.

The Native Plant Society of New Jersey is a statewide non-profit organization dedicated to the appreciation, protection, and study of the native flora of New Jersey. Founded in 1985, we have hundreds of members across the state, and are organized into county and regional chapters. Our members include gardeners, horticulturists, naturalists, landscape designers, students, and native plant enthusiasts from all walks of life. To become a member of this group please contact Chapter Leader Christine Black at rancocas@npsnj.org.

What are Native Plants

&

Why Should I Care?

Native plants are those that occur naturally in the region where they evolved are are adapted to the growing conditions that occur therein.

Native pollinators are naturally attracted to their flowers and the various species of native wildlife evolved to depend on these plants for shelter, reproduction, and food in order to sustain themselves. Plants and animals that have evolved together depend upon each other for survival and are mutually exclusive.

Using native plants in public and private landscapes can help to reduce the threat of invasive non-native species to the region's biodiversity. By choosing a range of native plants in your home landscape, you can provide:

  • Protective cover for many animals
  • Seeds, nuts, and fruits for squirrels and other mammals
  • Seeds, fruits, and insects for birds
  • Nectar for hummingbirds and butterflies
  • Larval host plants for butterfly caterpillars

BONUS!
Planting native plants in your home landscape actually makes gardening easier for you because they are perfectly suited to the region in which you live. They require less fertilizer and less watering and will tend to grow more successfully than non-native plants. The tremendous diversity of their flowers, forms, and/or habits allows every possible condition of soil, degree of sunlight, or amount of moisture on your home garden.

The Rancocas Nature Center Chapter of the NPSNJ was formed in October, 2013.
